2004 Big Bear Choppers Merc Hardtail
This is the first production Big Bear Choppers Merc ever built — a rare and historic piece of custom motorcycle history. I ordered this bike immediately after Big Bear Choppers released images of their Merc prototype in 2004. At the time, company founder Kevin Alsop confirmed to me that I had purchased their first production Merc. While I never received a formal affidavit from Kevin despite my request, the original order sheet with the 2004 date is included in the sale as provenance.
About the Build:
This Merc was custom-built by me, using high-end components and thoughtful modifications throughout. Though I originally ordered it with an S&S 107″ motor, Big Bear Choppers mistakenly sent the more powerful S&S 113″ High Compression V-Twin — paired with a Super G Shorty carburetor and electric compression releases for easy starts.
Performance & component highlights include:
Jims 6-speed transmission
3″ BDL open primary
Performance Machine brakes and hand controls
Big Bear billet grips, Spade mirror, and custom modified intake
Spike hi-torque starter
Internally ceramic-coated and wrapped Venom exhaust pipes
Big Bear Hidden Switch wiring harness
Blinker module with brake sensor – blinkers pause while brake is engaged
Internally routed wiring, custom motor-mounted speedo bracket, custom risers, and internal throttle
After completion, Big Bear Choppers sent me internal fork sleeves for the springer front end to increase rigidity. These are silicone-mounted and removable if desired.
Condition & Notes:
Just 2,800 original miles
Always garaged, never laid down or wrecked
Paint, powder coating, and seat show minor wear consistent with age
AGM battery installed November 2024
Original horn was lost during a ride, but wiring remains intact
Wiring for vacuum advance is present; module never installed
This is a true one-of-a-kind machine from one of the most iconic custom chopper builders of the 2000s. Whether you’re a collector, enthusiast, or rider with a taste for the rare and historic, this bike stands alone in both provenance and build quality.
Don’t miss your chance to own the first production Merc from Big Bear Choppers — a standout from the golden era of custom choppers.
